CONNECT is Leading from Within: Prioritizing Wellbeing for Our Municipal Leaders

By Kelley Kelley

Kelley Kelley is CONNECT’s Director of Public Safety & Wellbeing. Kelley formerly served as the Mayor of Turtle Creek Borough.

In local government, the focus is almost exclusively on addressing day to day issues like the new pothole that popped up overnight, balancing the budget, or making sure there are enough police officers on duty.  Here at CONNECT, we’ve recognized a critical truth, the health of a community is linked to the health of those who lead it.

The demanding nature of serving as an elected official or municipal staff member often comes with the responsibility of making high pressure decisions, public scrutiny, and the very real risk of burnout. That’s why CONNECT has been working on developing our Wellbeing Initiative to bring the focus back to the people who keep our municipalities running.

Why Wellbeing Matters in Local Government

When we surveyed our municipal members, the feedback was clear. Leaders are facing intense stressors, from the  mental toll of managing public crises to managing an increasing divisive political climate. We found that:

  • Burnout is a systemic risk: If a local government official or staff member isn’t caring for their own mental health, the impact ripples through the entire staff and, eventually, the community.
  • A Speed of Trust approach: Effective governance relies on relationships. When leaders are stressed and overextended, collaboration suffers.
  • A lack of tailored resources: Traditional corporate wellness programs don’t always translate to the unique pressures of the public sector.

A Healthier Governance System

By prioritizing the wellbeing of local officials, CONNECT isn’t just offering another program, we are building a more resilient and effective governance system. A leader who is supported and healthy is a leader who can serve with more compassion, clarity, and longevity.

As we continue to grow our initiatives around Wellbeing, we invite all our member municipalities to get involved. Whether it’s attending a virtual lunch time meditation hour, or implementing a small wellness change in your own borough building, every step counts.
